The Subtle Seller | NWM debunked Myth #2: Only People at the Top Make Money
Feb 21, 2025
This particular myth is fascinating to me as it is something that I too once thought was reality. In my personal experience I have hit financial goals that I had within my own Direct Sales (network marketing/NWM) business, and have seen many other women do the same. While conceptually i do agree that those at the top, most likely make the most money - it doesn't mean they are the only ones that make money at all.
What I like about this business model is there is opportunity - you can treat this as a straight commission based affiliate business, making between 25-35% commission strictly on sales; leaving the income potential endless. OR you can grow a team, support others in growing their business, and generate multiple income streams from one business.
In my experience and opinion the only true differentiator between who does and who doesn't make money is this: who treats this like a business versus who treats this like a hobby. So, let's dive in!
The Myth: Only People at the Top Make Money
So, what's the real deal with this myth? Let's explore further...
The Reality:
While early adopters may have an advantage, success in direct selling depends on effort, consistency, and skill—not just when you joined. Many people who enter later surpass earlier recruits by being more active, strategic, and dedicated to their business.
Where to start: Understanding the Compensation Structure
One of the most common misconceptions about direct selling is that only those who join early—or those at the "top"—make any real money. However, in legitimate network marketing businesses, compensation is based on effort and results, not seniority. Many compensation plans allow individuals to out-earn those who joined before them by focusing on sales, customer relationships, and team leadership. Check out the how to earn compensation presentation for my direct sales business here. Complete transparency is so important when choosing a company to work with.
Why Effort Matters More Than Timing
Joining early does not guarantee success. and joining later does not mean failure. Here’s why effort trumps timing in direct selling. Let me just repeat that in case it is not explicitly clear: JOINING EARLY DOES NOT GUARANTEE SUCCESS AND JOINING LATER DOES NOT MEAN FAILURE.
So what does dictate "potential" success (please note that NO network marketing/direct sales/social selling company or consultant can make income claims), so take these as simply how you could make money, should you choose to actually work:
-
Sales Drive Earnings: Unlike pyramid schemes, legitimate direct selling companies focus on product sales. Those who actively sell and build a customer base will see financial results, regardless of when they started.
-
Performance-Based Promotions: Many companies offer rank advancements and bonuses based on individual achievements. If someone who joined later works harder, they can surpass earlier members.
-
Leadership and Mentorship Pay Off: Those who develop strong leadership and mentorship skills can grow their teams and increase their earnings, even if they weren’t among the first to join.
Examples of Late Joiners Succeeding
There are countless examples of individuals who joined a direct selling company years after its launch and still became top earners. These people focused on learning, consistency, and serving their customers rather than dwelling on when they started. Many newcomers outshine early adopters by leveraging modern marketing techniques, such as social media and personal branding, to reach a broader audience. They are able to utilize what was created before them, connect with and deliver a great experience with the company's expanded efforts, and create buzz with continued product launches.
How to Maximize Your Earning Potential
If you’re considering a direct selling business and worried about timing, focus on these key strategies:
-
Choose a Company with a Strong Product Line: Ensure that the company offers products that you believe in and that customers genuinely want to buy.
-
Invest in Your Skills: Continuous learning in sales, marketing, and leadership will set you apart.
-
Be Consistent: Success in any business requires ongoing effort—daily actions add up over time.
-
Utilize Modern Marketing: Social media, content marketing, and personal branding can help you reach customers beyond your immediate network.
-
Lead with Integrity: Build trust with your customers and team members by focusing on authentic connections rather than aggressive sales tactics.
Final Thoughts
Success in direct selling is not reserved for those who joined first—it’s built by those who show up, put in the work, and develop their skills over time. If you’re willing to be strategic and consistent, you can surpass many who joined before you and create your own success story.
